We knew that he had major issues with milk and soy seemed to be a problem too. We have been battling all of this since he was 7 weeks old but did not know that milk was the issue until he was 4 months old. I breastfed for 14 months and had to watch my diet to keep him from screaming for hours. My major frustration is that he now has been diagnosed with wheat allergy too!! I wish that our general doctor would have sent us to allergist months ago. We were trying to figure out why he was having blow outs all of the time and no one figured it out. We are fortunate and have a daycare that feeds him what he can have and then I supplement the rest. As a teacher, this is very scary. I teach Special Education preschool and we feed snack to our children daily. We have to know every allergy because we don't want to cause any issues. We also have to know which medications they are on because some medications can not have the child have greapfruit or other citrus. I have even had a child who could not touch play-doh because of the ingredients in it. Food allergies are a major issue in the school and if we educate the teachers, it will take the stress off of the parents and the teachers won't be so scared of harming their students. Thanks to resources like FAAN, laws slowly changing, and overall social awareness rising, it's been such a relief to see that things are improving for severe allergy people. Schools are beginning to understand that this is a growing issue, not one that can be swept under the proverbial rug. If there was a magic button to push, I'd push it, to get all schools on the awareness board. Wouldn't it be great if not one more child went into anaphylactic shock while under the care of a school? I'd love to see ALL districts/schools get a grip on how to deal with these children's hidden disability! (To do what was best for our children, we have been commuting them to the next town/district for several years). Awareness, it's the only defense against exposure to life-threatening allergens. He is allergic to milk and eggs, and we also have to avoid all nut products. That t-shirt is great! I hate it when people just hand him a cookie or other food items without asking first. With Halloween looming 'just around the corner' I have to be proactive in protecting my child from peanuts and all tree nuts. Since most chocolate is processed in factories that also processes nuts, it's hard to find "safe" candy to give my child. I started a 504 Plan at my child's school in order to protect her and ensure that the school staff are all on the same page when it comes to "safe" foods to pass out for Halloween! With the 504 Plan in place, all foods brought into her classroom must be store bought, with lables as to inspect for hidden allergens. With this rule in place, there is less of the threat of cross-contamination from "home baked goods". Of course there will always be the risk of foods coming in "under the radar" but I always make sure that I attend events to monitor the foods she may come in contact with. Happy Halloween! Hello!
